Notes from the Underground
Ceaselessly definable-
To portray onself
Is to project or withdraw,
To absorb or let loose.
It is a perpetual reinvention.
Misunderstood before, defined after -
It is the identity of anonymity.

Silence is Golden: They Won't Go When I Go
When Kurt Cobain took his life a decade or so ago, I was floored. I was driving that day from school and I had to turn to another radio station to verify that I heard the right news. It was tragic. It was a huge loss. I was deeply saddened and angry at him for robbing us a pioneer in the music industry.

A week ago, I got a call from P. She was a bit frantic and wanted to find out if it was true . . that something bad happened Michael Jackson. I was online and went browsing for news. Farrah Fawcett just passed away and that was the only headline. I kept refreshing the page to see any breaking news. Then a link came out . . MJ has died but the source was the tabloid medium, TMZ. I clicked the link but nothing was loading except for an hourglass that kept turning for a good 5 minutes. There was heavy traffic causing net congestion . . so it must be serious.

I was prepared for the news, and indeed, another great artist has passed.

Michael Jackson, dead at 50, from cardiac arrest.

I grew up with MJ songs. He was huge in the 80's and 90's along with Madonna. I tried the moonwalk and did the "hih-hih-hihs" and "aaws!". He was such a phenomenon with unparalleled talent. Surely, he had flaws and some people ferociously picked on it. But it never deterred him to create music and entertain us with his talent. It may seem cliche but it is true that only do we realize the grave loss when a great person is gone. A talent like his only comes once in many generations.

Michael, you will be missed. But we will forever remember your music, your dance and your passion to entertain. You are indeed the King of Pop and it was such an honor to know your songs, witness your immense talent and be inspired with your humanity.

Thank you.

No more lying friends
Wanting tragic ends
Though they do pretend
They won't go when I go

All those bleeding hearts
With sorrows to impart
Were right here from the start
And they won't go when I go

And I'll go where I've longed
To go so long
Away from tears

Gone from painful cries
Away from saddened eyes
Along with him I'll bide
Because they won't go when I go

Big men feeling small
Weak ones standing tall
I will watch them fall
They won't go when I go

And I'll go where I've longed
To go so long
Away from tears

Unclean minds mislead the pure
The innocent will leave for sure
For them there is a resting place
People sinning just for fun
They will never see the sun
For they can never show their faces
There ain't no room for
the hopeless sinner
Who will take more
than he will give
He ain't hardly gonna give

The greed of man will be
Far away from me
And my soul will be free
They won't go when I go

Since my soul conceived
All that I believe
The kingdom I will see
'Cause they won't go when I go

When I go
Where I'll go
No one can keep me
From my destiny.

Dear Kuya Kiko,

You defined our generation. You redefined our nation. You gave a beat that shattered the silence of ineptitude and monotony. We marched with our head held high as we sing your songs and search for national identity. We wore the three stars and a sun with pride and joy. For these, we are eternally grateful and appreciate you for being one of the brightest stars that led the way.

Salamat, Francis M.

Kaleidoscope World
Francis Magalona (1964-2009)

So many faces, so many races
Different voices, different choices
Some are mad, while others laugh
Some live alone with no better half
Others grieve while others curse
And others mourn behind a big black hearse
Some are pure and some half-bred
Some are sober and some are wasted
Some are rich because of fate and
Some are poor with no food on their plate
Some stand out while others blend
Some are fat and stout while some are thin
Some are friends and some are foes
Some have some while some have most

Every color and every hue
Is represented by me and you
Take a slide in the slope
Take a look in the kaleidoscope
Spinnin' round, make it twirl
In this kaleidoscope world

Some are great and some are few
Others lie while some tell the truth
Some say poems and some do sing
Others sing through their guitar strings
Some know it all while some act dumb
Let the bassline strum to the bang of the drum
Some can swim while some will sink
And some will find their minds and think
Others walk while others run
You can't talk peace and have a gun
Some are hurt and start to cry
Don't ask me how don't ask me why
Some are friends and some are foes
Some have some while some have most

Every color and every hue
Is represented by me and you
Take a slide in the slope
Take a look in the kaleidoscope
Spinnin' round, make it twirl
In this kaleidoscope world

I just formed a volleyball team for the coming spring's FASAMI League. From Angel Face, we now call ourselves Super Angels and we decided to put Pinay superheroes on our jerseys.

Darna
Volta
Dyosa
Krystala
Dyesebel
Inday Bote
Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah

I am waiting for a couple more players with their chosen name. It's slim-pickins' but I have a few more suggestions . .

Electrika
Diwata
Fantastika

I want something familiar to the common tao, which brings nostalgia and a smile.

Even though I didn't vote for the guy, you have to recognize the historical impact and the excitement of his presidency. When he was sworn in, MLK's dream became a reality. He was different from the homogeneous bunch that took power in the oval office. Barack Hussein Obama. The name itself is so unlike the Smiths and Joneses that were familiar to most Americans but the nation welcomed it like a breathe of fresh air. Yes, he ran on a platform of change. But change takes time. Perhaps, in the hope of all hope, this is a best time to start that change.

For change to happen, there must be a return to personal accountability.

Then we all hope for the best.

God Bless America

A couple months ago, work sent us out to watch the Tigers lose . . it was another bad season for the team as usual. I didn't go there for the game but to be with my friends. We had awesome seats, right by the Pepsi area. I love taking pictures of these masonic tigers.

After watching the SNL skit of Fey (as Gov. Palin) and Poehler (as Sen. Clinton), 2 words made me curious.

MILF and FLERG

I had to google for definition. I don't even know if such words exist but I got so many online hits.

And Oh boy . . they're not nice things to say unless you want to be slapped.

That's all.
